Dr. Melanie Johnson, President and CEO,  John P. McGovern Museum of Health & Medical Science 

Dr. Melanie Johnson is the President and CEO for the John P. McGovern Museum of Health & Medical Science, also known as The Health Museum. She comes to The Health Museum as the first African American woman to hold a senior position in the history of the Houston Museum District and most recently, Dr. Johnson achieved national designation status for The Health Museum, as the only museum in the District that is a Smithsonian Affiliate. In her short tenure as CEO, Dr. Johnson has nearly doubled attendance and increased revenue by more than 30 percent. Prior to her arrival at The Health Museum, she served as the Director of Education for NASA’s Space Center Houston. 


Dr. Johnson’s effectiveness has received recognition by the largest association for museums. She was awarded the esteemed Nancy Hanks award for Professional Excellence out of 5,000 annual museum participants representing 50 countries, including the Smithsonian. Further, she was the 2015 recipient of the Pierre and Marie Curie award for Humanities in Managua, Nicaragua for her contributions to global education. She was featured in an episode of the Travel Channel’s “Mysteries at the Museum” as she presented facts about the Faith 7 Mercury capsule, on Radio Disney and Forbes Magazine. She was selected for Center for Houston’s Future (2014) and American Leadership Forum (2016). She was awarded the Ivy League Charitable Education Foundation award for one of the City of Houston’s Best Educators for two consecutive years, and one of the Top 30 Influential Women of Houston award in 2015. 


Dr. Johnson has a Bachelor of Arts degree in International Business/French from Auburn University, a Masters of Hospitality Management from the University of Houston, and a Doctorate in Curriculum and Instruction from Texas Southern University. 


Dr. Johnson serves on various boards, including the Houston Museum District Association, South Main Alliance, Park Plaza Hospital, Young Women’s College Preparatory Academy, and Texas Southern University’s Foundation. She also serves as an active member of Greater Houston Partnership and Greater Houston Women’s Chamber of Commerce. 


Dr. Johnson is married to Bruce Johnson, her spouse for 25 years and has two sons, Austin, 22 and Cameron, 18. 

The purpose of The Professional Group is to provide women of diverse professions with opportunities for building relationships and networks of personal and business associations through informative monthly presentations, professional development programs, educational and social activities, and philanthropic endeavors.
